I know I have posted about music practice tips before, but I find I have been sharing a specific tip frequently (in various ways to different people) so, I want to share again.

If you are practicing a challenging musical passage or trying to memorize a song:

  • Play for 10 minutes in the morning and focus on a “bite size” passage of the song.
  • Then, play 10 minutes at night and play through what you worked on in the morning and advance to the next portion of the song if/when you are ready.
  • Continue this 10 minutes in the morning/10 minutes in the evening routine until you’ve worked your way through what you wanted to master.
  • You can then play what you worked on each day until you feel you have “muscle memory.”
  • Notice how you accomplished A LOT in a short amount of time. Be sure to celebrate!
  • You are now ready to begin your next challenging project!

Breaking down the song into small increments keeps us from getting overwhelmed. And perhaps even more important is how the sub-conscious works throughout the day from the morning practice and the sub-conscious working during the night from the evening practice. This is an accelerated learning technique. We love sharing it. If you try this approach, please let us know your experience…
