I recently played the harp for a dear friend’s funeral and had quite an experience with harp and hand bells!
After I arrived at the church, I set up my harp, tuned and warmed up. Then, the bell choir and pianist arrived to practice as they were also playing during the service. As I listened to what they were playing, it was “Pachelbel’s Canon.” I walked behind the pianist to read the music and see what key signature he was playing in – it was “D.” I thought I can play in that key signature and walked over to my harp and began playing/improv-ing along with them! The pianist was thrilled and asked if I’d play with them during the funeral service. While I don’t usually play spontaneously like that, this felt completely right!
Later, when I was visiting with the pianist, I mentioned that I’d always wanted to play the harp with a bell choir and I got to do that at my dear friend’s funeral. I have no doubt that she orchestrated that from her light in heaven! 🙂
